Anwar to review impact of electricity bill increase at special meeting tomorrow

Tomorrow, a special meeting will convene with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional, and the Ministry of Finance to deliberate on mitigating the impact of the recent electricity bill increase on households. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, addressing his return from India and the Maldives, reiterated his commitment to addressing the concerns of the public in this matter.

He emphasized that subsidies to protect the majority of consumers will continue to be maintained. Anwar, also the Minister of Finance, disclosed that around 80% of domestic users consuming less than 600 kilowatt-hours per month remain unscathed by the rate hike, owing to the surge in fuel costs. However, the recent haze and warmer weather have led to an uptick in electricity usage, pushing some households over the 600 kWh threshold, thereby subjecting them to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment.
