Umno man quits council post after branding DAP his party’s ‘main enemy’

Permatang Pauh Umno chief Zaidi Said has stepped down from his role as a Seberang Perai city councillor after criticizing the DAP as his party's "main enemy" during a speech at the party's general assembly. In a Facebook post, H’ng Mooi Lye, state executive councillor, thanked Zaidi for his willingness to apologize and relinquish his position, taking responsibility for his mistake.

Zaidi's resignation letter, dated September 14, expressed regret and apologized for his speech, acknowledging that individual views must be expressed with caution, especially when holding responsibilities within a shared state administration. He also stated that his decision to resign was his own personal choice, made without any external pressure.

Zaidi emphasized that the Umno general assembly should not have been the platform for expressing views that could create misunderstandings about DAP, particularly in the context of cooperation and the administration of the Penang government. He recognized the long-standing histories, principles, and ideologies of both Umno and DAP, and stressed the importance of building mutual understanding and finding common ground through time, wisdom, maturity, and mutual respect.
