Ukraine welcomes Latvia’s steps to restrict transit of Russian grain — MFA

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Heorhii Tykhyi, addressed a briefing on Wednesday, September 16, discussing Latvia's efforts to restrict the transit of Russian grain. He informed that Russia has been contracting significant quantities of grain shipments via Latvia and its ports. Tykhyi stated that Ukraine has been closely monitoring this situation in coordination with Latvia, and they have observed that the Latvian government is actively taking measures.

Ukraine received "concrete signals" from Latvia about its intention to increase transit tariffs. Additionally, discussions have emerged regarding broader bans on Russian grain transit. Moreover, Ukraine is closely monitoring attempts to transport stolen Ukrainian grain under the guise of Russian grain. Tykhyi expressed appreciation for these actions by the Latvian government and emphasized the urgency of their implementation to prevent Russia from exploiting the situation.

He highlighted that Russia exploits the food crisis and the Black Sea blockade to fuel migration and destabilize Europe.
