UAE hails AI cell model capable of simulating responses to drugs

The UAE's embassy in Washington recently highlighted the creation of an artificial intelligence model capable of simulating human cell responses to drugs. This development, spearheaded by California-based GenBio AI and researchers from Abu Dhabi's Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Harvard, and Stanford, has garnered praise.

GenBio AI, co-founded by Eric Xing, president of MBZUAI, and Nobel Laureate David Baker, unveiled the system, dubbed AIDO Cell, in late August. AIDO Cell functions by simulating how a cell evolves in response to various experiments and displaying these changes across multiple experimental measurements, effectively creating a virtual cell.

The system is based on a "world model," a unique feature that allows predictions on a unified world state. This enables users to intervene mid-prediction and observe how real-world observations would change as a result of those interventions.

GenBio AI's website invites interested parties to join an early access waiting list for AIDO Cell. The company is also constructing a comprehensive virtual cell bank, enabling researchers to download custom cells and conduct open-ended experiments.

GenBio AI, with offices in Abu Dhabi, Paris, and elsewhere, is actively seeking partnerships to expedite the creation of this cell bank. The AI biotechnology company asserts that while they are not yet solving cell biology, they have developed a system that behaves like a cell, ingesting diverse multimodal data into a single shared world model. This model improves as it encounters new biological contexts.

GenBio AI's CEO, Eric Xing, emphasized that AIDO Cell represents a significant step forward in enhancing our understanding of life. He stated, "To truly understand life, we must model and simulate it across every scale." GenBio AI believes their world model is the path towards a future where biology becomes computable, predictable, and ultimately programmable.
