UAE hails AI cell model capable of simulating responses to drugs

On Wednesday, the UAE's embassy in Washington celebrated the advancement of an artificial intelligence model that can mimic a human cell's behavior when exposed to drugs. This achievement is attributed to GenBio AI, a California-based company, along with researchers from Abu Dhabi's Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Harvard, and Stanford. Co-founded by Eric Xing, president of MBZUAI, and Nobel Laureate David Baker, GenBio AI introduced the system named AIDO Cell in late August.

AIDO Cell simulates the changes a cell would undergo in response to experimental conditions, displaying these alterations across various measurements, effectively creating a virtual cell. This world model is distinctive as it predicts outcomes in a unified world state, allowing users to intervene during predictions and observe the real-world consequences of their actions.

GenBio AI's website invites those interested to join an early access list for AIDO Cell. The company is actively developing a comprehensive virtual cell bank, enabling researchers to download custom cells and conduct unlimited experiments. In addition, GenBio AI, with offices in Abu Dhabi, Paris, and California, is seeking partnerships to expedite the creation of this cell bank.

The AI biotechnology firm's website asserts that while cell biology remains unsolved, AIDO Cell can behave like a cell, ingesting diverse multimodal data into a single shared world model. As it observes new biological contexts, the model's accuracy improves. Eric Xing emphasized that AIDO Cell represents a significant step towards comprehending life by modeling and simulating it across all scales, advocating for a future where biology becomes computable, predictable, and ultimately programmable.
