Tuchel on Mexico v England: I regret not eating the grass

Thomas Tuchel expressed regret over not consuming any grass at Azteca Stadium after England's World Cup victory over Mexico. England defeated Mexico 3-2 in the last-16 tie in July, with Jarell Quansah serving a red card for much of the second half. The team went on to reach the semi-finals, where they lost to Argentina, before winning the Bronze medal match.

Tuchel made the admission during an interview with Daniel Sturridge for the FA’s upcoming 'Reflections: England’s World Cup Journey' feature. He recounted how he texted a friend after the match, saying, "I regret that I didn’t eat some grass after the match to keep something from this in my body forever." This was the moment that encapsulated the significance of England's victory, which was only the third time Mexico had suffered a defeat at the stadium in 90 competitive matches.

Tuchel hailed the win as one of the highlights of the campaign and praised the "huge bond" within the team, particularly the reaction to Jordan Henderson's tournament-ending injury. After falling over an advertising hoarding while celebrating the Azteca success, Henderson broke his arm. Within seconds, all players surrounded Henderson, creating a shield of empathy.

Tuchel emphasized that the game had everything one could desire, and the bond between the players was evident when they all stopped their celebrations to protect Henderson. England's next match is against World Cup winners Spain on 26 September as part of their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League opener, and Tuchel is optimistic about their prospects, believing that their World Cup run has cemented his relationship with the squad and represents "something to build on."

He expressed excitement, stating, "I’m very excited. I think we got another step closer and I think we’re there."
