Tourism set for major boost as Nairobi lands historic 2029 World Athletics Championships

Kenya’s tourism sector is poised for a major surge following the country’s historic selection as the host of the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi. This marks the first time an African city will stage the prestigious event in athletics’ 47-year history. The decision, announced by the World Athletics Council during its 242nd meeting in Budapest, Hungary, is a testament to Kenya’s rich athletics legacy and its growing reputation as a global sports tourism destination.

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei hailed the selection as a watershed moment, stating it will propel Kenyan tourism to new heights. Chepkemei emphasized that the influx of millions of global visitors in 2029 will provide an unparalleled opportunity to showcase Kenya's diverse attractions, from wildlife and coasts to culture, adventure, cuisine, and hospitality.

She vowed to collaborate with the sports, tourism, aviation, county government, and private sectors to create compelling tourism experiences that will convert the global spotlight into lasting tourism value for Kenya. The 2029 World Athletics Championships will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, which is currently being renovated in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

This historic achievement is the result of years of efforts to bring a World Athletics Championships to Africa, with previous successful bids by Mombasa, Nairobi (for U18 and U20 Championships), and Gaborone. Chepkemei expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his endorsement and the collective commitment of Kenya’s professional athletes, sports authorities, and partners that made this historic achievement possible.
