Tourism set for boost as Nairobi lands historic 2029 World Athletics Championships

Kenya's tourism sector is poised for a significant boost following the historic selection of Nairobi as the host city for the 2029 World Athletics Championships. This marks the first time an African city has been awarded the prestigious event in the competition's 47-year history. The World Athletics Council confirmed the decision during its 242nd meeting in Budapest, Hungary.

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei celebrated the selection, stating it is a landmark moment in Kenya's sporting and tourism history, affirming Kenya's status as a powerhouse in athletics and a global sports tourism destination. Chepkemei outlined plans to capitalize on the global attention, aiming to attract visitors beyond the stadium and into Kenya's diverse offerings, including wildlife, coastlines, culture, adventure, cuisine, and hospitality.

The KTB will collaborate with various sectors, including airlines, county governments, and the private sector, to create compelling tourism experiences that will capitalize on the global spotlight. Nairobi's selection follows a competitive bid process that included London, Rome, and Munich. The city already boasts a strong athletics pedigree, having hosted the Kip Keino Classic and previous World Athletics Championships for U18 and U20 categories.

Chepkemei also praised President William Ruto for his strong support of the bid and the commitment of Kenya's professional athletes and partners. The championships will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, undergoing renovations ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
