Tinubu pledges to end child labour, unveils four-year action plan

President Bola Tinubu has announced that the eradication of child labour is a top national development priority. He stated that this issue impacts education, poverty reduction, economic growth, food security, human capital development, and national security. During a National Dialogue in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu unveiled a four-year action plan and released the 2024 National Child Labour Survey Report.

The President emphasized that the federal government would intensify efforts to address the root causes of child labour, such as poverty, unemployment, inadequate access to quality education, and social exclusion. Tinubu highlighted education as a key solution, outlining reforms targeting out-of-school children, education data, teacher development, and skills acquisition.

He also announced the expansion of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme to support school attendance and combat hunger among vulnerable children. Tinubu called on state governments, employers, workers' organizations, development partners, and civil society to support the implementation of the National Action Plan, urging them to ensure their supply chains are free from child labour.
