Threats to my family forced me to tone down political commentary – Mr Macaroni

Nigerian skit maker and social commentator Mr Macaroni has explained why he became less vocal about government and political issues, citing repeated threats against him and his family. The entertainer's outspoken activism took a personal toll, with his family growing increasingly concerned for their safety. According to Mr Macaroni, his mother often called him in tears following what she perceived as suspicious activity around their home.

Threats, both subtle and serious, prompted his family to consider his departure from Nigeria for their own protection. Despite his resolve to stay, Mr Macaroni recalled the threats reaching a peak around the 2023 general election, during which he publicly advocated for wise voting behavior. His candid endorsement of a presidential candidate faced intense backlash, with insults and attacks directed at him.

The comedian admitted that his decision to voice his political preferences was rooted in his aspiration for a better Nigeria, but the experience left him questioning the extent of his future public commentary. Social media users frequently questioned his silence on ongoing national issues, to which Mr Macaroni responded, "What will I say?

We said it, but it looked as if we were the ones that didn’t know what we were saying." Mr Macaroni has previously reported receiving threats for his activism and political stances, including in 2022 when he accused parties of making threats against him and his family due to his refusal to endorse a specific presidential candidate.

His recent revelations shed light on the personal pressures behind his toned-down political commentary, even as he remains committed to addressing Nigeria's challenges and acknowledges he lacks interest in pursuing a political career in the country.
