The new Canon EOS R8 Mark II may not be retro, but I’m happy as it fixes my biggest complaints

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II, the latest entry-level full-frame camera from Canon, has been unveiled, though it doesn't live up to the retro expectations that have been circulating online. In truth, this new model appears to be the best Canon camera yet for those new to full-frame photography. Priced at £1729.99 body-only or £2119.99 with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM kit zoom in the UK, it competes with the Nikon Z5II and Panasonic Lumix S5II.

Despite its angular design, which draws inspiration from older Canon film SLRs, it doesn't feature retro elements like the OM System OM-3 or the engaging dials and switches of the Fujifilm X-T5. The camera retains most of the proven components from the three-year-old Canon EOS R8, including the sensor, shutter, viewfinder, and screen, ensuring solid performance and image quality.

However, the R8 Mark II introduces significant improvements, such as in-body image stabilisation and a focus-area joystick, addressing some of the weak points found in the R8's design. These updates position the R8 Mark II as a strong contender in the market, making it an interesting choice for full-frame camera enthusiasts.
