Federal agencies are investigating allegations that actress Hayden Panettiere ingested counterfeit drugs that led to her sudden death in South Carolina on August 16, 2023. Emergency responders discovered the 36-year-old actress in cardiac arrest while she was staying at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. Despite resuscitation efforts, she could not be saved.

Initial autopsy results found no physical trauma or signs of foul play, but the coroner has not released the official cause and manner of death as comprehensive toxicology tests are pending.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and Los Angeles authorities have been questioning several individuals, including a Southern California dealer whose narcotics allegedly supplied Panettiere with the deadly counterfeit pills. The final determination will be based on the results of the toxicology tests. Law enforcement has stepped up efforts to target dealers trafficking in realistic-looking prescription lookalike pills containing lethal ingredients, some of whom have been charged with murder following fatal overdoses.

Panettiere's representative, Kasey Kitchen, has urged the public to refrain from speculation, stating that her death remains under investigation pending the completion of toxicology results. She noted that unverified reports have fueled conflicting information and emphasized the need for patience as the investigative process unfolds.

Police reports indicate that Panettiere's boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach discovered her unresponsive and called for emergency help, presenting officers with a bag of her medication. Hickerson's legal representatives confirmed that no evidence of foul play was found and requested no further comment at this time.

The former child star had previously spoken about her struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues.
