SC rejects plea to reconstitute panel on CJP violence

The Supreme Court has denied a request to reestablish a five-member committee investigating allegations of police misconduct against student protesters in Delhi. The bench, consisting of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, determined that objections to the committee's members were based on speculation and preconceived ideas, and stated that the High-Powered Enquiry Committee (HPEC) was established to ensure fairness, transparency, and impartiality.

The court emphasized that the committee's objective is not to take sides in the case. The court instructed the HPEC to continue its investigation into allegations of pellet gun use, targeted violence, and harassment of female protesters, as well as excessive force and property damage by either party. The panel is also required to safeguard vulnerable witnesses and maintain confidentiality regarding their identities and submissions.
