Manoj Jarange’s Mumbai march faces health hurdle

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, who is journeying towards Mumbai, announced on Wednesday that his trip could be halted due to health issues stemming from extended travel and his ongoing hunger strike. Jarange arrived at Patoda in Maharashtra’s Beed district around 11 am, approximately 14 hours after departing from Antarwali Sarati in Jalna, where he initiated his latest protest. He then addressed an assembly there.

The activist mentioned experiencing a severe burning sensation in his stomach and feet. He further stated that if he undergoes treatment, the government would remain unconcerned, but if he discontinues treatment, they would become anxious. Jarange emphasized that the tour to Mumbai is taking a toll on his health, and he would only proceed if he feels well, as lengthy travel poses risks during a hunger strike. He also indicated that the tour could be abandoned if there are no other options.

Initially, Mumbai police had rejected Jarange's request to carry his protest to Azad Maidan. Having been on a hunger strike for 18 days, he is advocating for OBC quota for Maratha community members with Kunbi caste genealogies. Citing law and order concerns during the ongoing Ganesh festival, the police denied his permit.

Despite the denial, Jarange embarked on his journey to Mumbai on Tuesday, accompanied by a convoy of cars. Hundreds of villagers joined him along the route to demonstrate their support. Jarange told the crowd in Patoda on Wednesday that reservation for Marathas is more important than the tour, but he highlighted the health issues as a significant obstacle.

He requested his supporters to permit him to travel to Mumbai alone, without any vehicles following him. If they continue to accompany him, he stated he would alter his route and proceed to Mumbai while keeping the police informed. He added that if he is barred from entering Mumbai, his supporters would be welcome to join him.
