‘Read between the lines’: Ford signals support for Chow ahead of Toronto’s October election

Ontario Premier Doug Ford signaled his endorsement for Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow ahead of the city's October municipal election on Wednesday. Ford praised Chow's leadership and their strong working relationship, highlighting billions in joint funding she has secured for Toronto during her term. While Ford did not explicitly instruct voters on how to cast their ballots, his remarks suggest a notable shift from past disagreements over transit, bike lanes, housing, and budget issues.

The province is currently planning to remove bicycle lanes on major Toronto corridors, a move that Chow and city council have strongly opposed. Ford defended this plan as part of efforts to combat congestion, while Chow emphasized the importance of Toronto's bike network for safety, climate goals, and reducing congestion. Despite their differences on this issue, Ford and Chow have collaborated on significant infrastructure projects, such as the transfer of the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway to provincial control in 2027.

This partnership includes a $353 million commitment from the province to maintain the highways and ensure they remain toll-free. The two leaders emphasized unity and teamwork, stating that their collaboration is proving beneficial during a challenging period. Toronto's election is scheduled for Monday, October 26, with voting locations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
