Power minister seeks EFCC action on vandalism, energy theft

On Tuesday, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to address the increasing incidents of vandalism and energy theft in the power sector. Tegbe expressed concern that some companies with electricity access are not fulfilling their payment obligations, resulting in significant financial losses for Nigeria, estimated in the billions of naira annually. The minister's request came after a meeting with the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have regularly complained about the destruction of electricity poles, the theft of cables, and other essential power infrastructure. Tegbe noted that the Ministry of Power does not possess the authority to prosecute offenders involved in vandalism and energy theft. He emphasized that tackling this issue necessitates improved collaboration among relevant government agencies to safeguard power infrastructure and ensure that consumers who receive electricity pay for the service.

Tegbe also advocated for enhanced cooperation between the ministry and the EFCC to bolster enforcement and minimize financial losses in the sector. He reaffirmed his support for the commission's efforts in investigating and prosecuting individuals and entities engaged in economic crimes that undermine the power sector. Olukoyede, the EFCC's representative, described vandalism and energy theft as revenue fraud and acts of economic sabotage, vowing to collaborate with the ministry by implementing Fraud Risk Assessment and Control measures on all their projects.
