Poland suspends operations at two major airports following Russian airstrikes in western Ukraine

Poland is strengthening its security measures along its border with Ukraine following recent Russian drone strikes, according to Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The attacks, which occurred over the weekend, raised concerns among NATO allies about the potential threat to European security. The strikes targeted a train, potentially carrying military cargo, and prompted the reinforcement of border checkpoints and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Lithuania reported the first-ever downing of a Russian drone in its airspace, shot down by military officials. Italy's defense minister confirmed the incident, stating it was likely carried out by Russian forces. Other NATO members, including Denmark, have also reported similar incidents, with Denmark's military helicopter coming under fire from a Russian warship.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte attributed these actions to Russian President Vladimir Putin's desperation, emphasizing the need to bolster defenses along NATO's border with Russia and Belarus. The United States is working to prevent energy-related attacks between Ukraine and Russia, with President Trump claiming an agreement was reached to halt such strikes.

However, both Zelensky and the Kremlin later described the proposal as a non-binding statement. Ukraine has been targeting Russian fuel infrastructure, causing disruptions in Moscow's refining capacity and triggering global fuel price increases. Zelensky suggested a mutual halt in strikes on critical infrastructure could serve as a de-escalatory step towards ending the conflict.
