Oilers open camp mired in controversy around Formenton signing, Babcock hiring

General Manager Stan Bowman acknowledges the signing would be "polarizing" and respects differing opinions, stating they did thorough due diligence before signing Formenton to a one-year, $850,000 contract.

Bowman added that Formenton has shown growth since the 2018 incident. The Oilers' history of controversial signings, including Babcock and himself, has led to questions about the team's track record. Bowman emphasizes the organization's commitment to giving individuals a fresh start and their respect for the passionate fan base, which may include frustration over certain decisions.

The team will begin on-ice practices on Thursday, with key players Frederik Andersen and Matt Savoie absent due to injuries.
