Emir Sanusi reveals how Boko Haram, other terrorist activities started in Nigeria

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has shed light on the origins of Nigeria's security crisis, which he attributes not to individual acts of violence, but rather to divisive rhetoric in newspapers and political discourse. In his address at the launch of a biographical work on the late Chief of Army Staff Tukur Yusuf Buratai, Sanusi emphasized that the country's security challenges did not begin with Boko Haram, terrorism, or banditry, but rather with the act of classifying citizens as Northerners, Southerners, Christians, and Muslims.

This divisive categorization, he argued, created an environment conducive to the rise of violent and criminal organizations. Sanusi called upon Nigerian elites to distance themselves from politicizing ethnicity and religion, and to refocus on the development of their people. He argued that politicians should concentrate on providing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, while religious leaders should remain focused on their spiritual duties.

Additionally, Lt Gen Domenico Giani, the former Inspector General of the Corpo della Gendarmeria, highlighted the importance of accountability, intelligence, and regional cooperation in combating terrorism. He emphasized that a state must invest in institutions, services, and the well-being of its citizens, rather than merely relying on military force.
