Ningo Prampram needs jobs, not excuses

Ningo Prampram, home of Ghana's President, requires economic opportunities, not just excuses for unemployment. The district is brimming with potential, as evidenced by its 2026 budget which highlights its beaches as the primary tourist attraction. The district is already well-positioned, situated near the bustling cities of Tema and Accra. Yet, the focus remains on justifying the high unemployment rather than finding solutions.

The district boasts pristine white sand beaches, a natural asset waiting to be developed. To harness this potential, attention should be given to cleaning and preserving these beaches, improving infrastructure like roads, lighting, sanitation, and security, and spatial planning. This infrastructure would encourage the growth of businesses such as restaurants, beach clubs, boutique hotels, seafood markets, water sports, cultural attractions, festivals, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

Moreover, the district is home to Central University’s main Miotso Campus, a sprawling 248-acre academic community with a range of programs. This university could be a catalyst for economic growth, generating jobs in areas such as hospitality, transport, retail, healthcare, entertainment, professional services, and property development. These students would need accommodation, meals, transportation, retail, and entertainment - all potential sources of employment.

To truly capitalize on its advantages, Ningo Prampram needs to identify what draws people and then monetize that appeal. The coastline, the university, and proximity to larger cities are all part of this equation. Leadership in Ningo Prampram should not be content with explaining away unemployment. Instead, they must actively monetize the district's advantages.
