Linkin Park Drummer Plays Iron Maiden Classic as He Hears It for First Time: Watch

Colin Brittain, Linkin Park's current drummer, showcased his skills in the most recent installment of Drumeo's "For the First Time" series. The challenge for Brittain was to play the "Hallowed Be Thy Name" by Iron Maiden, a song he had not heard prior, as he listened to the melody without its drum part. Beginning the video, Brittain displayed his extensive knowledge of contemporary rock music before settling on this iconic Iron Maiden track.

He ultimately performed only one improvised take, demonstrating a proficiency in fast double-time grooves and occasionally incorporating punky beats. Nevertheless, he was able to pick up on Clive Burr's original arrangement's dynamics at times. His anticipation of a shorter track length was evident in his surprise and delight when the instrumental section continued for a prolonged period, compelling him to continuously generate drum parts.

The video concludes with Brittain listening to the original Iron Maiden performance, praising its rhythmic pocket and depth of arrangement as various instruments unified. He then offered advice on improvisation and the importance of musicians stepping outside their comfort zones of known licks and grooves, as well as striking a balance between their practiced elements and adapting to the specific arrangement of a song.

Brittain joined Linkin Park upon their return in 2023, following original drummer Rob Bourdon's decision not to participate in the band's reunion. An unshatter documentary, which chronicles Linkin Park's return, is scheduled for release on September 30th.
