Lebanon wants Israel security deal as prelude to peace

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called for international support in disarming Hezbollah and deploying a new security force to prevent a vacuum following the UN peacekeepers' departure from southern Lebanon. During an interview with AFP and ahead of his trip to France, President Aoun expressed his desire for a security agreement with Israel, which he believes could be a prelude to peace.

However, he clarified that a direct peace agreement is not feasible at this stage, as the alternative would be a costly war. The Lebanese president emphasized that disarming Hezbollah is non-negotiable and firmly committed to resolving the issue without conflict, stating that the objective is not confrontation but peaceful resolution.

Aoun also addressed Iran's role, stating that while they can have a relationship, Lebanon opposes interference in its internal affairs. He reiterated Lebanon's determination to disarm Hezbollah, reiterating that this decision is firm and unchangeable. The Lebanese leader's focus is on ensuring no vacuum in southern Lebanon, proposing a temporary force until the Lebanese army can take over, which could be composed of various international forces.

President Aoun's remarks come as Lebanon prepares for a new era, seeking to balance the demands of its international partners while pursuing its own strategic interests.
