Many districts have implemented blanket blocks to prevent students from using AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, on school networks. However, these blocks have proven ineffective, as students quickly find ways around them using mobile data or VPNs.

This approach not only fails to safeguard children but also shifts responsibility for AI use out of the hands of educators and into the realm of self-policing. With over 85% of school administrators recognizing the educational value of AI, the gap in implementation remains wide. Only 6% of teachers feel their school's AI policy is clear, and many districts lack a plan for integrating AI into education for students.

As AI continues to evolve at a rapid pace, schools face the challenge of balancing safety with educational opportunities. While some schools focus on preventing students from using AI for academic dishonesty, the broader implications of AI's impact on learning, socialization, and decision-making are often overlooked. The consequences of this divided approach could exacerbate existing educational inequalities, leaving children in districts with restrictive AI policies at a disadvantage in a competitive job market.
