Technische Entwicklung: Weniger Tempo bei KI: Von der Leyen stellt sich gegen Trump

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has spoken out against US President Donald Trump's downplaying of the dangers of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models. In a speech in Strasbourg, von der Leyen emphasized the risks posed by these cutting-edge AI systems and announced plans to invite key research labs to discuss how Europe could help support the industry in slowing down their development.

Trump had previously dismissed the risks and called the concerns surrounding AI a "crazy conspiracy." Earlier this year, leading figures in the tech industry, such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, had also warned about the potential dangers of AI, including the possibility of an AI swarm taking control of the entire internet and causing billions in damage.

Von der Leyen stressed that if developers of the technology speak out clearly on these risks, then the EU should take action as well. Collaboration with other nations, such as Canada and the United Kingdom, is planned to address these issues. The EU Commission will focus on frontier models, which are at the "edge" of what is currently technically possible, and develop through both programming and autonomous training.

The Commission President announced plans to work with partners on model evaluation, verification, early warning, and AI security. The EU Commission will also present ideas for increasing European computing power and finding new ways to invest public and private funds into promising companies.

In November, the President will unveil significant initiatives for using AI in key sectors, with the greatest potential in healthcare, transportation, agriculture and food, modern production, and defense and space. Von der Leyen emphasized that the goal is to create AI that creates value, and this should be done in a responsible manner, at lower costs, and with lower energy consumption. Above all, she stressed that AI should support humans, not replace them.
