IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirms push to bring 2027 auction back to India

Ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, two major developments are likely: the return of the player auction to India after a three-year hiatus, and a renewed discussion about the controversial Impact Player rule. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has expressed his intention to host the auction domestically, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is seeking fresh input from franchises and other stakeholders on the Impact Player rule.

The 2027 auction is anticipated to be a smaller event, with the location yet to be determined. The auction has been held in Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi for the past three years. Dhumal, who will be re-elected as IPL chairman at the BCCI Annual General Meeting on September 18, stated that the league would attempt to bring the auction back to India, despite challenges in securing a venue due to the wedding season.

The host city will be chosen based on the availability of a BCCI-preferred venue. The Impact Player rule, which allows teams to substitute a player at any point during a match, has also come under scrutiny. BCCI is seeking feedback from franchises regarding the rule, which has been discussed at a recent IPL Governing Council meeting.

Several high-profile Indian cricketers, including Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel, have voiced their concerns about the rule, citing its impact on the importance of all-rounders. The BCCI is open to reviewing the concept but will consult all stakeholders before making a final decision.
