IPL auction to return to India after three years

The IPL auction, which has been held overseas for the past three years, will return to India for the 2027 edition. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced this decision during the IPL Governing Council meeting on Tuesday, September 15. This is a change from the previous pattern, where the auction was held in Kochi in 2023 and then moved to Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi in subsequent years.

The decision comes after several franchises expressed concerns over the logistical and operational difficulties of sending their delegations overseas for a mini auction. These concerns were highlighted following the auction in Abu Dhabi last year. The BCCI is still considering the possibility of hosting the mega auction next year overseas, but this decision specifically pertains to the mini auction.

The host city will be chosen based on hotel availability, as in previous years, and the fact that October to December falls during India's wedding season, necessitating a venue with sufficient five-star hotel rooms. The BCCI will need over 100 rooms for two nights to accommodate all ten franchises. Additionally, the Governing Council has postponed the decision on the Impact Player rule to a separate meeting within a month.

While most franchises favor continuing the rule for at least one more season, citing their squad-building strategies, some argue that any change should be implemented next year, regardless of whether the rule is eventually scrapped.
