Iowa Republicans in battleground House races join vote to halt the Iran war

The United States House of Representatives has voted for a third time to end the war in Iran, passing a war powers resolution that would prevent President Donald Trump from continuing military action without congressional authorization. The vote, 220-204, saw several Republicans join all Democrats in supporting the resolution. However, none of the resolutions have been taken to the president, who is expected to veto the measure.

Rep. Seth Moulton, a Democrat who pushed the resolution forward, criticized the conflict, stating that it has lasted longer than Trump had promised. Republican Rep. Brian Mast questioned the Democrats' plans to withdraw military resources from the region, emphasizing Iran's ongoing threat to the United States. This vote is likely the final House action on the Iran war before the midterms, as the conflict has been a significant factor in the political campaigns.

The war, launched by Trump in February, has resulted in more than $38 billion in costs at the end of July, with projections of additional monthly expenses between $2 billion and $3 billion depending on the intensity of fighting. The Congressional Budget Office predicts inflation will be 0.5 percentage points higher than expected due to the war.

Despite Trump's promise not to engage in foreign wars upon winning a second term, the Iran conflict is impacting the Republican Party, which holds control of the House and Senate. In previous votes, four Republicans initially opposed the resolution, but this number increased to seven in Tuesday's vote, including members from battleground states like Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.

The House has attempted multiple times to alter the course of the war, but all efforts have been unsuccessful as long as Trump can veto the measures. The Senate has also approved a war powers resolution, but it was later reversed by GOP senators after Trump criticized them. While Congress has the authority to declare war, the president retains command of the military, and the War Powers Act from the Vietnam era seeks to limit the president's power with a time limit for sustained military actions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the need to lower gas prices, attributing some improvement to the Iran conflict entering a new phase with allies stabilizing the region. He believes the conflict will end as the election approaches, potentially leading to further reductions in gas prices and grocery costs.
