Illinois farmers are farming the government for cash

As the fall harvest approaches, Illinois farmers and landowners are not merely focused on bringing in their corn and soybean crops. Instead, they are also preoccupied with reaping taxpayer money from the federal government, which continues to provide substantial financial support. This practice of farming the government for subsidies has become prevalent in the heartland.

The latest proposed injection of funds is an $11.1 billion supplemental farm-aid package, requested by the Trump administration from Congress in June, in addition to the already significant amounts of money being allocated to agriculture this year. Simultaneously, the Senate Agriculture Committee is attempting to revive a new five-year farm bill following an unsuccessful August committee vote, which was marred by a partisan disagreement over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

While there is genuine financial strain in farm country, there is no single "emergency" driving this recent request for additional funds. Farmers have been grappling with years of high production costs and declining commodity prices, and this year, the Iran war has exacerbated their financial burden by driving up fuel and fertilizer costs.

These are indeed serious challenges. However, it has become increasingly apparent that Washington's response to virtually any downturn or disruption in the agricultural sector involves pouring more taxpayer money into the system.
