How to Improve Quality of Picture in Photoshop

Improving the quality of a photo in Adobe Photoshop is a process that involves several careful adjustments rather than applying one strong filter. To start, open the image you wish to improve in Photoshop. It's advisable to create a duplicate of the original layer to preserve the untouched image if needed.

Next, consider increasing the image resolution if the picture is small or has low resolution. Go to Image > Image Size and adjust the width and height while keeping the proportions linked to prevent stretching or distortion. Photoshop also offers a Generative Upscale feature for newer versions, which can upscale low-resolution images using 2x or 4x options.

If the image is not bright or lacks contrast, use Image > Adjustments or adjustment layers to enhance brightness and contrast. Make small changes while closely monitoring the image. Brighten an underexposed photo, reduce excessive brightness, and gradually increase contrast while avoiding loss of detail in highlights and shadows.

Improper or dull colors can make a picture less attractive. Use Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Curves, Vibrance, or Hue/Saturation to improve overall color and saturation. Vibrance can be particularly useful when you want to enhance muted colors without making the entire image overly saturated.

Pictures taken in low light often contain visible grain or digital noise. Utilize Photoshop's noise-reduction tools to minimize unwanted grain before applying strong sharpening. This is crucial because excessive sharpening can also make existing noise more apparent. Sharpening can make details and edges appear clearer, with Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen or Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask as useful options.

When using Unsharp Mask, Photoshop provides controls for Amount, Radius, and Threshold. Apply the adjustments gradually to avoid unnatural edges or halos. It's not always necessary to sharpen the entire picture. If the main subject is a person's face, product, or important object, sharpen that area more carefully while keeping backgrounds relatively smooth. Photoshop allows using the Sharpen Tool on selected areas with a Protect Detail option to reduce unwanted artifacts.

Before applying any sharpening or detail adjustments, check the image at 100 percent zoom. This allows you to see the actual pixels and evaluate whether the changes enhance the image or create excessive noise and halos. Adobe recommends evaluating sharpening at 100 percent for accurate results.

After achieving the desired result, save the working file as a PSD if you wish to preserve layers and continue editing later. For sharing online, save a copy as JPEG or another suitable format. Always keep the original file separate to maintain an untouched version. It's important to avoid excessive editing, as too much sharpening or saturation can lead to unnatural results.

Use the right method for the specific problem at hand. If the image is too small, use upscaling; if it's soft, use careful sharpening; if it's noisy, reduce noise; and if it's dark or dull, adjust brightness, contrast, and color. Combining these techniques thoughtfully can result in a significantly cleaner image than relying on a single filter.
