Hearing-impaired girl’s doctor dream, a stethoscope question, a tech answer

In May's NEET exam, 22 lakh candidates faced disappointment due to a suspected paper leak, including 17-year-old Vidhita Gupta. Born with congenital hearing loss, Vidhita had high hopes for her NEET score, but the cancellation of results cast doubt on her medical career aspirations. However, Vidhita's determination prevailed, and she secured admission to MP Shah Government Medical College in Gujarat's Jamnagar.

Vidhita's unique challenge lay in using a stethoscope, a crucial tool for doctors. As a cochlear implant recipient, she cannot hear with her ears, making traditional stethoscopes impractical. Yet, technology offered a solution. Dr. Rajesh Vishwakarma, her ENT surgeon, explained that the addition of Bluetooth to cochlear implants enables patients to use wireless devices like stethoscopes, enhancing their independence and career prospects.

Vidhita's journey to hearing began at age four when she received her cochlear implant, a device comprising a surgically implanted receiver stimulator and a speech processor over the ear. Over the years, she faced challenges, including isolation due to frequent job transfers by her judicial father. However, in class 12, she found supportive peers who helped her overcome her shyness.

The family consulted multiple ENT specialists before opting for the cochlear implant, a decision that significantly improved Vidhita's life. With advanced technology, including Bluetooth-enabled cochlear implants, Vidhita can now use a wireless stethoscope, allowing her to pursue her medical education alongside her hearing-impaired peers.
