Hannah Yeoh wants KL to compete with Singapore as regional concert hub

Kuala Lumpur should aim to vie with Singapore as a top regional concert destination, according to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, as reported by The Straits Times (ST). Yeoh argued that Kuala Lumpur residents should not have to travel to Singapore to enjoy their favorite performances, suggesting that the city should actively compete for major international concerts.

Malaysia is seeking to elevate Kuala Lumpur's status as a key player in Southeast Asia's live entertainment scene by reducing regulatory barriers and costs for international acts. In May, the city's DBKL lowered security deposits for foreign performers from RM30,000 to RM15,000, while local stage or cultural performances' deposits were cut from RM10,000 to RM4,000.

Furthermore, the Concert and Event in Malaysia Incentives (CEMI) scheme, introduced in 2025, offers a 30% rebate on eligible local expenditure for qualifying international productions, up to RM1.5 million, with an annual allocation of RM10 million. These initiatives have led to a surge in concerts, with KL Headline Season 2026 featuring 25 major international performances across six venues, projected to draw over 500,000 local and regional fans.

Notable international acts slated to perform in Malaysia include The Weeknd and BTS, whose November and December shows have already sold out. Additionally, 245 international acts have been approved to perform in Malaysia this year, generating nearly RM1.72 billion in concert-related revenue in 2025, compared to 104 concerts in 2022, 335 in 2023, and 408 in 2024.

While the market shows promising activity, with more promoters bringing international acts to various venues, industry experts acknowledge that Singapore's infrastructure and capacity for large-scale stadium shows currently give Singapore a competitive edge. However, Malaysia seeks to strengthen its position in the Southeast Asian touring circuit, rather than simply replicating Singapore's model.
