Hannah Yeoh wants KL to compete with Singapore as regional concert hub

Kuala Lumpur should aim to rival Singapore as a regional hub for major concerts, according to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, according to The Straits Times. She argued that Kuala Lumpur residents should not have to travel to Singapore to attend performances by their favorite international acts. Yeoh called for a review of her department's procedures to make Kuala Lumpur a more attractive destination.

Malaysia has been taking steps to position the capital as a stronger player in Southeast Asia's live entertainment market. The city's government has reduced security deposits for foreign performers and introduced a scheme offering a 30 percent rebate on local expenditure for qualifying international productions. These measures have resulted in a significant increase in concert activity, with more than 450 concerts held in Malaysia in 2025, up from just 104 in 2022.

The KL Headline Season 2026 alone will feature 25 major international performances across six venues, targeting over 500,000 local and regional fans. Promoters report a busier market, with international acts from various genres and venue sizes flooding the scene. While Malaysia has made progress, industry players acknowledge that Singapore remains a dominant regional concert destination, thanks to its well-established infrastructure and ability to host large-scale stadium shows.

Nevertheless, Malaysia aims to strengthen its role in the Southeast Asian touring circuit, rather than simply replacing Singapore.
