Mrs. Lartey detailed the collaboration between the Ministry and the Information Communication Technology Education Service (ICTES) in formalizing these graduates, effectively creating jobs for them. Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on September 16, the Minister emphasized that this step is among several ongoing efforts to bolster support for persons with disabilities and enhance their involvement in national development.
Additionally, she revealed that 19,760 individuals with disabilities have already benefited from the Disability Common Fund across 208 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies. The government is also proactive in legal reforms, having recently approved amendments to the Persons with Disabilities Act 2006, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Mrs. Lartey highlighted this amendment as a much-needed reform that will further fortify Ghana's framework for safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Ministry has also rolled out sensitization programs on disability-inclusive disaster risk management across 11 regions, aiming to enhance preparedness and response capabilities in vulnerable communities. Furthermore, ICT equipment, including desktop computers, laptops, accessible software, Braille displays, and embossed graphic tablets, have been procured for seven special schools through the Ghana Digital Acceleration Project, a collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.
Installation is already complete at three of these schools, with work ongoing at the remaining four. Mrs. Lartey noted that these technological resources represent the first hands-on experience with such equipment for students who have previously had no access to it.
