Ghana risks losing international intelligence-sharing support over alleged security leaks — Muntaka

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has cautioned that the improper handling of sensitive security data by trusted government officials could jeopardize Ghana's intelligence operations and impact the country's collaboration with international security allies. He addressed a high-level security training session in Accra aimed at members of the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) concerning the National Security Act.

Muntaka emphasized that officials entrusted with sensitive duties undergo thorough background investigations and are expected to safeguard the information confided in them. He expressed apprehension that some officials might abuse their positions and subsequently leave government leaders accountable for the fallout. According to Muntaka, such breaches could also deter Ghana's international partners from sharing intelligence, as they may be uncertain about access control or the confidentiality of their own investigations.

Consequently, he advocated for enhanced responsibility among officials managing sensitive information and improved cooperation among security agencies and local government bodies. Muntaka recognized that security challenges vary between urban and rural regions, acknowledging that existing guidelines may impose undue limitations on local authorities.

He suggested that revised guidelines could alleviate some of the emerging challenges. Furthermore, the Minister urged MMDCEs to comprehend their security obligations and collaborate closely with security agencies in their respective jurisdictions, stressing that local government officials bear defined roles within Ghana's security framework beyond merely representing the President.
