General : Malaysia Day 2026 Spirit Shines In Kuching Despite Haze

KUCHING: On Malaysia Day 2026, a palpable sense of unity filled the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), where an estimated 5,000 attendees braved haze from the border to partake in the festivities. The event, themed Malaysia Madani: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati, was broadcast nationwide, enabling citizens across the nation to join in the celebrations. Sarawak's Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, graced the occasion as the distinguished guest of honor.

The ceremony commenced with a Segulai Sejalai performance, symbolizing the collective journey towards progress, followed by the national and Sarawak state anthems, Negaraku and Ibu Pertiwiku. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed the gathering, after which the digital signing of the Malaysia Day 2026 Commemorative Book took place, along with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. This symbolic act underscored their commitment to fortifying national unity.

The crowning moment of the day arrived with the ceremonial cutting of pulut kuning, a rice dish emblematic of prosperity, which marked the launch of Malaysia Day. This was succeeded by the entry of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy, followed by the recitation of the Rukun Negara by 26-year-old Sarawak boxer Muhammad Asyraf Abdullah, popularly known as Kilat Boy.

The celebration further showcased the country's cultural richness through musical theater performances celebrating patriotism and unity – Malaysia Madani, Kesejahteraan Dinikmati and Serumpun Madani Tiga Wilayah.

The evening concluded with a spectacular fireworks display over the Kuching Waterfront, following Faizal Tahir's emotional rendition of Aku Berjanji, which elicited a standing ovation from the captivated crowd.
