FRSC warns motorists against fake traffic offence SMS

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to motorists and the public about fraudulent text messages claiming they have been recorded for new road traffic offences. These messages are being circulated via mobile devices and social media platforms, falsely appearing to be communications from the FRSC. According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the fraudulent messages create a sense of urgency by informing recipients of a new traffic offence and directing them to a specific website to review the details.

The FRSC has disowned the website "frscgov.top/ng," emphasizing that it has no affiliation with the organization. The messages are designed to trick recipients into providing sensitive information, such as personal details, financial data, or other sensitive information. The FRSC advises recipients not to click on suspicious links or provide any sensitive information in response to the messages.

They should not engage further with the senders and report the matter through appropriate channels. The FRSC urges motorists to verify any alleged traffic offence through official FRSC channels, specifically noting its official website as frsc.gov.ng and its contact number 122. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has directed public sensitization on the fraudulent scheme and urged motorists to exercise caution online.

The FRSC will collaborate with law-enforcement and cybersecurity authorities to take action against those responsible, advising Nigerians to follow the message: "STOP. VERIFY. REPORT."
