4 truck occupants detained after driver found without CDL in Michigan

Four men were arrested in Michigan on Friday after a driver of a commercial truck was found without a commercial driver's license (CDL), according to authorities. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. in Saginaw, Michigan, when a Michigan State Police officer stopped the truck on Hanchett Street near Davenport Avenue due to equipment defects and an improperly secured load.

The officer discovered the driver lacked a CDL during the inspection. The truck, carrying five people who did not speak English or possess identification, was then handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for immigration checks. CBP agents identified four of the occupants as Honduran nationals with unlawful presence in the U.S., stemming from overstayed visas.

The four were taken into federal custody, while the driver was not arrested but instead issued a citation for operating a commercial vehicle without a CDL. The trucking company owning the vehicle also received a citation for defective equipment. The trucking company, destination and origin of the truck, as well as the nature of its cargo and the driver's employment status, were not disclosed.

This incident underscores how routine commercial vehicle inspections can lead to the discovery of licensing infractions as federal and state authorities ramp up their focus on Commercial Driver's License (CDL) compliance.
