Fourth measles-related death reported in US as outbreak grows

Pennsylvania has reported its fourth death linked to measles as the United States grapples with the largest outbreak of the vaccine-preventable disease in decades, according to state health officials. The latest fatality was an 18-year-old, bringing the total number of measles-related deaths in the state to four. All four victims were unvaccinated, and the outbreak has intensified to its worst level in over three decades, said Pennsylvania's health secretary Debra Bogen.

The previous deaths included two infants too young to be vaccinated and a 40-year-old. Three other measles-related deaths across the country were recorded last year during the beginning of the current outbreak. This prompted a contentious debate between Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor, Josh Shapiro, and President Donald Trump's vaccine-skeptical Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Shapiro accused Kennedy of stoking vaccine skepticism and misinformation, claiming the CDC had falsely withheld reporting Pennsylvania's deaths to support Kennedy's narrative.

Kennedy refuted the allegation, stating that MMR vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles. Measles, once considered eliminated in the US in 2000 due to vaccination efforts, has resurfaced in recent years as vaccination rates and public trust in health authorities decline.
