FG commissions 3.3MW solar mini-grid, 2MWh battery storage at Yakubu Gowon University

The Federal Government has officially launched a 3.3MW solar hybrid mini-grid with a 2MWh battery storage system at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja. This initiative is part of the government's commitment to provide stable electricity supply to federal universities, replacing reliance on diesel generators.

The project, implemented under Phase 2 of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), also includes a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre to foster local technical skills. Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, highlighted that the facility would benefit 58,726 students and enhance campus lighting and security with 388 solar-powered streetlights.

The minister emphasized the importance of reliable electricity for teaching, research, and reducing the university's operating budget. Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Abubakar Aliyu, stressed the broader impact of the project, urging the university to utilize the Renewable Energy Workshop as a research hub for distributed energy resources and develop academic programs around renewable energy.

The REA is currently implementing Phase 3 of the EEP and has established the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) to oversee the long-term management and optimisation of renewable energy assets. Aliyu encouraged the university's governing council to ensure the continued success of the infrastructure. The project aligns with Nigeria's broader efforts to expand electricity access through renewable energy and distributed power systems.
