After layoffs and robot push, GM brings back Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

General Motors (GM) is reintroducing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to its vehicles after removing them three years ago. The decision to bring back smartphone connectivity features comes after major cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and the deployment of collaborative robots at its Factory Zero plant in Michigan. GM first announced it would phase out CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric vehicles in favor of its proprietary software, but has since reversed course.

The new infotainment system, set to debut in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, will support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GM has redesigned the interface based on customer feedback, featuring a high-contrast display, reworked home screen, and a smaller card format for the smartphone interface alongside vehicle information like trip details and trailer status. A persistent climate bar will remain visible throughout.

Google apps will continue to be available separately through the vehicle's entertainment system, allowing drivers to use Google Maps and access apps like Disney+. The new software will support over-the-air updates for security and software improvements without a dealership visit. GM's implementation differs from systems where CarPlay or Android Auto take over most of the vehicle's display, preserving space for vehicle-specific information.
