Dubai approves new 12-lane, 80km highway project linking Sharjah and Abu Dhabi

Dubai has greenlit a new 80km highway project linking the emirate to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, as part of efforts to alleviate traffic congestion. The first phase of the endeavor, costing Dh3.5 billion, is projected to slash travel times by up to 60% and enhance inter-emirate connectivity. Spanning from Al Shanouf Road to Dubai-Al Ain Road, the 12-lane corridor will be capable of handling up to 24,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, serving over 3.1 million residents.

Key features of the highway include 72 bridges, 17 tunnels, and 45 stormwater drainage culverts, forming a crucial new transport artery across the UAE. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, announced the project on Wednesday, emphasizing the government's dedication to infrastructure investments as a catalyst for economic growth and improved quality of life.

Phase two of the initiative will extend the highway from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Faya Road in Abu Dhabi. This expansion will bolster the connection between the new road network and Al Maktoum International Airport and Etihad Rail, facilitating seamless integration of road, air, and rail transportation.
