Dubai-Abu Dhabi in 30 minutes: How the UAE’s high-speed rail will transform travel

The United Arab Emirates is set to revolutionize travel between its two largest cities with the launch of a high-speed rail service. This new train system is part of Etihad Rail's network and is expected to shave around 30 minutes off the journey between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which currently takes around two hours by car.

Etihad Rail has unveiled plans to develop a fully electrified, high-speed rail line connecting the two emirates. The project includes two stations in Dubai and four in Abu Dhabi. The high-speed service will operate at a maximum speed of 350km/h, placing it among the fastest in the region.

The high-speed rail is anticipated to serve up to 21 million passengers annually, significantly expanding labor market access, enabling same-day business connectivity, and strengthening integration between commercial districts. It will also support tourism and hospitality growth, as well as airport-to-city connectivity.

The project is seen as a long-term infrastructure investment with broader economic benefits. Over the next 50 years, it is expected to contribute Dh145 billion to the UAE's GDP, supporting productivity growth, labor mobility, and regional development. The fully electrified network will offer higher speeds, lower operational emissions, and greater long-term efficiency compared to conventional diesel systems.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, witnessed the announcement of the high-speed train project in January 2025. The new rail link is a testament to the UAE's commitment to future-ready transport, reflecting Etihad Rail's focus on safety, reliability, and performance from the outset.
