China fears AI threat to regime, but resists US slowdown push

Beijing, China, expresses concern over potential AI threats to its governmental stability and political security, despite rejecting U.S. calls for a slowdown in AI development. The Chinese government has implemented stricter controls on AI advancements to mitigate the negative impact on both political and social order. Chinese Minister of State Security Chen Yixin highlighted six dangers associated with AI, including the spread of false political rumors through deepfake content and the manipulation of public opinion through smart comment brigades.

He warned that AI-driven cyberattacks, information leaks, and military applications could pose significant risks to China's security. China has established guidelines for AI agents that require human oversight to maintain control and prevent malicious use. President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of laws, regulations, and technological monitoring to ensure AI remains under human control.

Despite these concerns, China remains committed to taking a leading role in global AI governance and expanding participation in AI norms from Asian, African, and South American nations.
