Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) to work together as a team in order to build and develop the nation, primarily focusing on resolving the current conflict between the two oil and gas companies, according to Bernama. The prime minister, who serves as the finance minister, emphasized the importance of both companies honoring and acknowledging laws and rights at the state and federal levels to reach a consensus amidst the ongoing dispute.

Anwar assured on September 16 that it is not impossible to resolve these issues, stating that the principles already committed to will remain, with only some aspects of the commercial agreement needing to be prioritized. He made this statement while addressing Malaysia Day celebrations in Kuching.

Sarawak has been seeking greater control over its oil and gas resources through Petros, by appointing the state-owned company as a gas aggregator for its domestic market. However, Petronas maintains that its national role includes managing upstream activities under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) and maintaining Malaysia's liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline, including the existing export contract.

In May 2025, Putrajaya and Sarawak signed a joint declaration reconfirming Petros' continued role as the aggregator of gas in Sarawak, while reaffirming Petronas' ongoing role under the PDA.

In January, Petronas referred to the Federal Court for clarification regarding the legal framework governing its operations in Sarawak, while asserting the existence of ongoing differences over its obligations. In the following month, Sarawak filed its own petition with the same court to challenge the validity and continued application of several federal petroleum laws in the state, including the PDA, the Land Consolidation Act 1966, and the Petroleum (Exploration) Act 1966.

The Federal Court acknowledged Petronas' appeal to continue challenging its constitutional framework in March. Finally, Anwar announced in June that several key issues have been successfully resolved, and a final agreement is expected to be signed soon.
