Ashanti Minister Halts School Demolition Plan

In a development that quelled concerns over the potential demolition of a school classroom block in Mankranso, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has denied allegations of such plans. The controversy arose after a viral video surfaced, featuring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Officer for the constituency, Baabi Dehyee Kwaku, who expressed worry over the planned demolition.

Kwaku alleged that projects initiated under the previous NPP administration were being targeted for demolition, including the proposed 24-hour market. District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West, Abubakar Sedik, firmly refuted the claims, stating categorically that no demolition work was planned for the classroom block or the 24-hour market.

Sedik explained that the school building, constructed in 2022, had remained unused since its completion, and its construction was deemed a misplaced priority. He emphasized the economic benefits of the proposed market, asserting that it would boost trading, create employment, and stimulate socio-economic development in the region.

Dr. Amoakohene, in a separate statement, also dismissed the reports, urging citizens to disregard the misinformation and await the completion of a review. The Regional Minister directed the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly to halt all activities related to the issue pending the review. The controversy has reignited debate over the government's 24-Hour Economy Market Programme, with critics alleging that existing public and community assets are being demolished to make way for new markets.
