Argentine judge orders suspension of Falklands oil project

An Argentine judge ruled on Wednesday to halt a British-Israeli oil venture near the Falkland Islands, a decision aimed at bolstering Buenos Aires' claim over the British-administered territory. This interim order comes after a lawsuit filed by 1982 war veterans and environmental advocates earlier in the month. The dispute stems from the planned Sea Lion oil field, situated approximately 220 kilometers from the islands.

The judge's decision prohibits the involved companies, Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, from initiating any drilling, infrastructure installation, or hydrocarbon extraction activities. The suspension will remain in effect until an environmental impact assessment is completed by the relevant national authority. The ruling grants both sides ten days to submit information regarding the project's status, contractors, and financiers.

President Javier Milei's administration has also contested the project, contending it contravenes a UN resolution urging both parties to refrain from unilateral actions in the islands until the dispute is settled. The 1982 conflict concluded with Argentina's surrender, resulting in 649 Argentine deaths and 255 British casualties.

Argentina has solidified its stance on the Falklands after US President Donald Trump hinted at a potential shift in US policy towards the territory. The United Kingdom maintains its claim to the islands, asserting they are British and have not recognized Argentina's courts' jurisdiction over the matter. Islanders voted overwhelmingly in 2013 to remain British.

However, Argentina dismisses this outcome, asserting that the principle of self-determination does not apply to a population it perceives as settled by Britain since 1833.
