Anambra govt releases records of alleged unpaid debts by Peter Obi during tenure as governor

The Anambra State government has released the public debt records of Peter Obi, who served as the state's governor from 2010 to 2014. In a press statement, the government claimed that Obi left behind a significant debt, both in domestic loans and unpaid pensions and gratuities. The statement questioned the veracity of Obi's claims that he had eliminated "phantom debts" and criticized the "ecological loan fallacy."

According to the government, Obi spent approximately $4.05 billion (N5.4 trillion) during his tenure and left eight external borrowings totaling N127.4 billion as of June 2026. The statement highlighted the poor state of infrastructure, including water schemes, healthcare, and education, which the government claimed were left in a decrepit condition.

It also noted that only 27% of Anambra residents patronized public health institutions due to poor quality and non-functionality.
