Abia: LGA Chairman convenes emergency security meeting as cattle destroy farms in Umunneochi

In Abia State's Umunneochi Local Government Area, Chairman Sunny Afurobi convened an emergency security meeting to address the destruction of farms by cattle, believed to have been brought in by herdsmen. The assembly included security officials, Hausa community leaders, representatives of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, and affected communities in Obinolu and Ngodo. The meeting aimed to quell tension sparked by the farm devastation and to address farmers' concerns, particularly those of women.

Mayor Afurobi announced the meeting as a swift response to the "Save Our Soul" plea from Obinolu women, who had witnessed the alleged destruction of their farms by Fulani herders. He lamented that Umunneochi had enjoyed relative peace under Governor Alex Otti's administration but expressed concern over recent incidents that threatened the region's peace and security. The mayor highlighted the destruction of crops like cassava, local beans, maize, and melons, which are critical to the rural populace's livelihood.

Reports of herders encroaching on farmlands and causing damage had continued to reach the mayor's office. Afurobi emphasized that any action undermining the efforts of others to achieve growth, progress, and survival must be rejected. He assured stakeholders that the meeting's resolutions would be vigorously pursued to ensure maximum security, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development in Umunneochi.

Indigene narrators from Obinolu and Ngodo communities shared their experiences, stating that their cassava farms had been uprooted by herders, and other crops had been trampled upon. They also alleged incidents of harassment and abduction of farmers, while expressing concern over herders disregarding existing agreements and restrictions on open grazing.

Community representatives called for decisive action from the Abia State Government to protect farmers and their livelihoods, dissociating themselves from any illegal open grazing activities.
