‘3 Days in Chow Kit Road’ brings old KL to life through dance

Amirah Redza and Chee Kar Hung star as Jasmine and Owen in the dance theatre production “3 Days in Chow Kit Road.” The show, created by Kenny Shim, transports audiences back to late 1970s Kuala Lumpur through dance. Set in the bustling Chow Kit Road, the production explores the contrasting communities of the area and the stories of its inhabitants.

From delivery boys and seamstresses to nightclub workers and gangsters, the characters bring the neighbourhood to life. The production follows Owen and Jasmine’s relationship as they navigate three eventful days in this vibrant slice of Kuala Lumpur. Shim, director, choreographer, and producer, was intrigued by Chow Kit’s contrasts, highlighting the different communities living and working together.

Over the course of the production, themes of family, love, and belonging are explored. The dance style incorporates influences from ballet, jazz, social dance, and Malaysian cultural forms, with the style adapting to each scene. With a cast of over 30 dancers, five musicians, and two singers, the production offers a captivating, multi-layered experience that invites audiences to reflect on the choices that shape our lives and those around us.
