2024 election: ‘My exit contributed to NPP’s 2.1 million vote drop’ – Alan Kyerematen

Alan Kyerematen, founder and leader of the United Party, has stated that his departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may have contributed to the party's significant decline in votes during the 2024 presidential election. Speaking on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem, Kyerematen acknowledged that his exit could not be entirely responsible for the NPP's loss of 2.1 million votes, but some NPP insiders have expressed the belief that his departure played a role in their decision.

Kyerematen explained that his independent candidacy was initially met with skepticism by some NPP members, who believed that an independent candidate would have little impact on the party's fortunes. Furthermore, he mentioned that members of the party circulated statements aimed at discrediting him following his announcement. Post-election, Kyerematen claimed that the narrative against him and his independent bid included allegations that he lacked a sufficient support base, which had led some voters to abstain from voting for the NPP.

The official election results showed that the NPP's presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, received 4,877,611 votes, a decline of about 1.85 million votes from their 2020 result. In contrast, Kyerematen, as an independent candidate, garnered only 32,457 votes.
